A strategic process for strengthening nonprofit funding capacity

Each year on the second Friday in March, the nonprofit sector observes International Grant Professionals Day, an annual recognition of the professionals who help organizations secure and steward grant funding. The observance was established to increase awareness of the grant profession and to recognize the individuals who support nonprofit programs through proposal development, grant management, and project implementation.

The day is championed by the Grant Professionals Association, which highlights the vital role grant professionals play in advancing community initiatives and upholding high standards of ethics, program development, and financial stewardship.

For those working in the field, the work often happens quietly. Grant professionals research opportunities, shape program concepts into fundable initiatives, and ensure that funded programs are implemented responsibly. In many organizations, they also support evaluation, sustainability planning, and collaboration with partners.

In other words, the work extends far beyond simply writing proposals.

Over the years, I have worked with a wide range of nonprofits, from small community hospitals hosting grant-funded initiatives to grassroots coalitions supported by braided funding streams. Like many organizations navigating a competitive funding environment, teams are often balancing the pursuit of new opportunities with the ongoing development of internal systems that support sustainable funding.

To support organizations in building that foundation, SJR Nonprofit Solutions utilizes the SJR Grant Readiness Framework™ to guide mission-driven leaders along the path to developing a diverse grant funding portfolio.

A Strategic Approach to Grant Readiness

The SJR Grant Readiness Framework™ is designed to help nonprofit organizations strengthen the systems and strategies that support successful grant funding.

Rather than focusing solely on proposal development, the framework takes a broader approach to helping organizations align program priorities, funding opportunities, and internal capacity.

The goal is to help organizations move toward strategic grant readiness by establishing a funding infrastructure that supports long-term funding success.

Phase 1: Assessment

The first phase focuses on understanding an organization’s current readiness for grant funding.

Activities include reviewing organizational structure, partnerships, and financial systems.

Typical activities include:

  • Organizational intake and document review

  • Evaluation of funding infrastructure

Deliverables from this phase may include a grant readiness scorecard, infrastructure gap analysis, and recommendations for strengthening funding capacity.

Phase 2: Strategy

Once readiness is assessed, the next step is identifying which programs or initiatives are best positioned for grant funding.

This phase focuses on aligning program priorities with funding opportunities and developing a structured funding strategy.

Key activities include:

  • Identifying strategic funding priorities

  • Developing implementation plans and timelines

Organizations often leave this phase with:

  • Clearly defined funding initiatives

  • Targeted funder prospect research

  • A 12-month grant calendar

The goal is not simply to pursue more grants, but to pursue the right funding opportunities at the right time.

Phase 3: Development

The final phase focuses on building the core assets needed to support competitive grant proposals and activating the funding strategy.

This includes development of the Signature Grant Blueprint™, which typically includes:

  • Program narrative

  • Logic model

  • Evaluation framework

  • Budget framework

Once those elements are in place, organizations can activate their strategy through grant submission, post-award grant management, and longer-term sustainability planning.

Why Grant Readiness Matters

Grant funding is increasingly competitive, and funders expect organizations to demonstrate clear program design, measurable outcomes, and responsible stewardship of resources.

Organizations that invest time in strengthening their funding infrastructure are often better positioned to:

  • pursue aligned funding opportunities

  • develop stronger proposals

  • demonstrate meaningful impact

  • manage funding responsibly over time

In practice, grant readiness shifts an organization’s approach from reactive grant seeking to strategic funding development.

For nonprofit leaders exploring ways to strengthen their organization’s funding capacity, the SJR Grant Readiness Framework™ offers a structured starting point.

Shifting from reactive grant seeking to a strategic funding approach does not happen overnight, but small steps can create meaningful progress. Taking time to assess readiness, strengthen internal processes, and align funding opportunities with program priorities can help build a more sustainable path forward.

For nonprofit leaders who are beginning to explore this shift, a conversation can often provide helpful perspective. If your organization is thinking about strengthening grant readiness or developing a more intentional funding strategy, consider scheduling a Discovery Call to discuss your goals and explore how SJR Nonprofit Solutions may be able to support your mission-driven work.
